SIMONY AS A MANIFESTATION OF SHADOW CORRUPTION IN THE LATE MIDDLE AGES: HISTORICAL AND LEGAL ANALYSIS

Corruption was a widespread phenomenon in medieval society and was characteristic not only of secular institutions, but was also present at all levels of the church hierarchy. Concepts such as «the desire to usurp power», «simony», «selling indulgences» and «nepotism» are closely related to the history of the Church in the Middle Ages.

There is an increased interest on the part of philosophers, theologians and lawyers in such a phenomenon as simony at the end of the 14th — beginning of the 15th century. In part, this was due to the desire to initiate reforms in the Roman Catholic Church. Medieval thinkers and founders of the Reformation in their works prove that simony has penetrated all levels of the Church and must be suppressed by the strict norms of canon law, which require the removal of «simonious» bishops and priests.

It was possible to condemn simony not only doctrinally, but also legally, only at the Council of Trent in 1545-1563, where a number of important provisions were introduced to eradicate church corruption. These measures made a great contribution to the fight against simony, laying the foundation for the reform of the Catholic Church in the West.
