LEARNING ANALYTICS IN THE EDUCATIONAL PROCESS: WHERE IS BIG DATA LEADING US?

The article discusses the application of learning analytics (LA) in the educational process. It is widely used, allows to optimize the learning process, quickly assess the quality of materials and teaching, take into account students’ results and achievements, and predict their academic performance.

Among the ethical issues that arise when using educational analytics the most common discussions arise around confidentiality, transparency, labeling, data ownership, algorithmic fairness, and the university’s obligation to proactively interact with students in the presence of academic failure. Each of them emphasizes the autonomy of the student, his active and conscious involvement in the process of controlling his learning for independent decision-making. There are examples of university Codes for the use of learning analytics which indicates the need to introduce regulatory practices for the use of new educational tools.
