RIVALRY: ETHICAL ASPECTS

The concepts of “rivalry”, “dispute”, “competition”, “contest” and “competitive selection” are not only commonplace, but also refer to phenomena deeply embedded in everyday life. Even in nature, the mechanism of natural selection is at work. This makes it even more important to examine interpersonal confrontation to understand the opportunities and threats it creates within the cultural context.

In the proposed text, the situation of rivalry is considered from an ethical perspective, based on the identification of its key components: WHO is involved, WHAT the rivalry is about, WHERE it takes place, WHAT EXPERIENCES the individuals have, how they INTERPRET the situation, how they behave, what outcomes RESULT, and how they RELATE to those outcomes. After looking at each of these components, it may become clearer that rivalry is an important type of human interaction in culture. Rivalry should not be seen as an end in itself, but rather as a communicative tool embedded in a broader framework of relationships—ideally, ones characterized by mutual respect and fairness.

Keywords: rivalry, key components of a rivalry situation, ethical analysis.
