THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK AND CURRENT TRENDS IN ETHNOCULTURAL IDENTITY OF THE MORDOVIAN PEOPLE IN THE REPUBLIC OF MORDOVIA (BASED ON THE 2020 ALL-RUSSIAN POPULATION CENSUS)

In the context of globalization and various interethnic interactions, the issue of preserving and transforming the ethnocultural identity of Russia’s small-numbered peoples is becoming particularly important. The Mordovian people, the second largest ethnic group in the Republic of Mordovia, are undergoing complex processes of change in key markers of ethnocultural identity. An analysis of these processes based on current empirical data, such as data from the 2020 All-Russian Population Census, is necessary for the development of adequate state and regional policies in the field of interethnic relations, as well as for the development of the theoretical basis of domestic ethnosociology.

The purpose of the study is a comprehensive analysis of the dynamics of Mordvin ethnic and cultural identity in the Republic of Mordovia through the prism of key theoretical approaches and data from the 2020 All-Russian Population Census.

The methodological basis of the study is the main theoretical approaches to the study of ethnicity: primordialist, instrumentalist, and constructivist approaches. The empirical basis consists of official data from the 2020 All-Russian Population Census, as well as secondary analysis of data from sociological studies published in scientific journals. The study employs methods of comparative analysis, a structural approach to identity, and statistical data interpretation.

Ethnocultural identity is a complex, multi-component phenomenon that reflects an individual’s or group’s awareness of belonging to a particular ethnic group through the prism of characteristics such as knowledge of language, traditions, historical memory and values. For the Mordvins, a Finno-Ugric people historically inhabiting the territory of the modern Republic of Mordovia, the problem of preserving and transforming ethnocultural identity is becoming particularly relevant in the context of globalization, urbanization and intensive interethnic communication, when national borders between different peoples are becoming blurred.
