FAMILY RESOURCE IN THE STRUCTURE OF SOCIAL CAPITAL OF EXTERNAL MIGRATION

Annotation. The article raises the question of the role of family resources in the
structure of social capital of external migration. The author points out that,
despite the urgency of the problem of migrant integration, the family, which is
one of the most important factors of adaptation, does not fall into the focus
of researchers and is not a priority of migration policy. The official
statistics presents insufficient information on migrant families; there are no
special programs for adaptation and assistance to such families and support for
migrant children. To analyze the problem, a study was conducted, the basis of
which was an interview with foreign migrants to the Republic of Mordovia from
various states of the former Soviet Union. The research showed that the migrant
family in the new conditions is faced with the need to overcome a wide variety
of problems, which are characterized by a high degree of uncertainty and
require serious efforts to adapt to changing cultural environments. Migrants
have to solve all these problems, first of all, with the help of their own
resources. Under these circumstances, the resources of one’s own family turn
out to be the most effective factor in long-term adaptation to new living
conditions. In this aspect, relationships within migrant families can be seen
as an element of social capital, which allows participants in social relations
to work together to achieve common goals. However, these resources are not
efficient enough without special state and regional programs for adaptation and
support of families. An adequate response to the new challenges of migration
requires a rethinking of the role of the institution of family in the process
of adaptation of migrants and the strengthening of measures for its social
support.
